Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Lindsay Anderson crafts intimate, expressive songs exploring human truths, while sonically painting pastoral and mystical landscapes as backdrops. In her various collaborations (L’altra, Telefon Tel Aviv, Same Waves) Anderson blends fantasy and reality seamlessly while crossing musical genres efforlessly from dream pop to electronic to folk-country. Lyrically, she poetically shares her own experiences, truths and perspectives, inviting listeners to find themselves in the stories — to connect, relate and discover a place of solace, escape and healing.

Algorithm of Desire
Same Waves (Flau 2018)

From 2015-2017 Lindsay worked with producer/engineer John Hughes recording songs she had written the previous years while raising her first child. These songs and a few additional songs co-written by Anderson & Hughes were released under the name Same Waves in 2018. Algorithm of Desire is both a testimonial as well as an expression of shared human experiences. Lyrically the songs question the truth behind desire, especially in the age of technology when our wants and needs are algorithmically determined. Anderson’s familiar themes of relationships, desire and self-actualization mean more on this album as we collectively determine what it means to be human in the age of technology.

Many a year has passed since she first arrested us with her singing, but Anderson has never sounded better, incontrovertible proof being her “There’s a quiet in your eyes / As you take your first breath” vocal during the closing third of Collapsing Time.

“Same Waves”

Shot by Indian filmmaker Jaseel Nambikandy on location in Kerala India, the breathtaking, shadowed solo figures taking in sweeping views of lakes and mountains gets to the core of emotions expressed in the title track ‘Same Waves’ from Algorithm of Desire - isolation, longing, desire for connection and a deep human need to experience the sublime.

  • “Known for her soaring, intimate and honeyed vocals, Lindsay's songwriting styles include sweet pop, insightful folktales and powerful rockscapes.”

    Last FM

  • "L'Altra make music that's almost too soft to matter, with an alluring, slightly sexual pull. Their songs burst open upon inspection; you must first shrink to their size, but once you do, you'll probably want to stick around for awhile."

    Pitchfork

  • “Lindsay's worldly voice guides us through realms of soulful piano, cosmic strings, homely acoustic, and lithe percussion. Lindsay manages to make dark and moody sound sweet and appeals to those of both temperaments.”

  • "'If' is a chamber pop album of grace and maturity."

More recordings

Lindsay Anderson ‘If’ (2007, Minty Fresh)

Recorded from 2004-2007 in Chicago, this first solo album describes the tender experiences of early motherhood, while recalling the warm, freedom of childhood and the surrender to the transition to adulthood.

“The album begs to be listened to on phones — the production is artful and delicately layered. Her voice is like Julie Doiron but a bit more subdued. A sexy, interesting album.”

L’altra ‘Music of a Sinking Occasion’ (2000, Aesthetics)

L’altra was formed in 1999 by Lindsay Anderson, Joseph Costa, Ken Dyber and Eben English. The group released an EP in early 1999 and then ‘Music of a Sinking Occasion’ which is a tender love song between Anderson and Costa who split during the album’s recording. It’s a dialogue between lovers quietly and naively surrendering to the reality of the end of a beautiful union.

“L'altra has a distinct sense of withdrawal, leading the listener to the edge then quickly pulling back and shooting off in another direction. With marvelously subdued production, Music of a Sinking Occasion takes listeners on a very sad trip down memory lane where cymbals crash and drums thump heavily but never seem louder than a whisper in the listener's ear.” - Ken Taylor, All Music

L’altra ‘In the Afternoon’ (2022 Remaster, Talitres)

Recently remastered and released on the French label Talitres, L’altra’s second album is a beautiful, warm collection of music likened to a Mark Rothko painting. Smears of Wurlitzer, trumpet, Rhodes and Gibson guitars swirl around Anderson’s and collaborator Joseph Costa’s sweet call and responses.

“An alluring atmosphere creating a series of rich musical tapestries to back lazily delivered vocal musings.” -Pitchfork

Hibernis ‘Middle of the Meds’ (2018, Serein)

What started as a warm-up exercise during Same Waves’ studio sessions turned into a deeply intimate and expressive blending of layers of voice, whispers, synths, sounds and silences. These songs are deep meditations, digging into emotion, complexity, and what is beyond the material.

“The music is a mind-altering meditation, the kind that opens the third eye and cleanses a chakra. The swaying tones help to shake off mental fatigue and its meditative offerings are better than a subscription to Headspace.” - Fluid Radio, UK

Same Waves ‘My Way’ Single (2017, Flau)

A 2 song single release as the pre-cursor to Same Waves’ full-length. “My Way” is a swirling sound of beats, synths, Wurlitzer and Anderson’s sultry vocals, while “Night Ride” is a darker, acoustic expression. Both songs are a perfect backdrop to a summer night drive, windows down.

“Anderson, along with Hughes, a producer and synthesized-sound designer, create a beautiful and strange hybrid of electronic and organic elements on their first single".”

L’altra ‘Telepathic’ (2012, Saint Marie Records)

This double-album release is L’altra’s final and a collection of music showing the musicians at their finest. Bringing together their shoe gaze, dream pop, electronic and even country influences, Anderson and Costa create music that is distinctly their own.

”L'Altra's take on indie pop is a gentle wash of hushed guitars, rolling pianos, subtle electronics, and measured rhythm all supporting Lindsay and Joe's call and response vocals. Telepathic finds L'Altra aiming somewhere between their big inspirations." - Darla
